My mom (and my Grandma)

….would take care of people, and when they’d die, she'd stick to that last moment. She was one of the first End of Life Doulas I ever knew. She'd look stunning and so full of love, compassion, and love and not a hint of fear. I know this, because I was there, and I was not only learning about my mom but I was also learning about my own path. I'll be forever thankful she'd drag me to these moments.
Like my mom would say, "you show up for your people", and this has translated so beautifully on being there for the one being born, the unborn or the not yet time to being born, and the dying one, or being born to another dimension. No school would have given me this better than my mom. And for that I'll always be grateful.

Gracias Mami!”

Sylvia Gonzalez, MPH, DACM, LAc

Sylvia (she/her/ella) was one of the first “family” I had in Chicago. I owe much to her support and our long night conversations on how to dismantle systems of oppression to uplift the collective healing opportunities for all. A true gem for all!

She is a bilingual Spanish-speaking acupuncturist and herbalist. She uses acupuncture, herbal medicine, body work, food therapy, and lifestyle recommendations to address a wide variety of health issues, and treats children, youth, adults, elderly, and pregnant people.

Sylvia has a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine from the Pacific College of Health Science, and a Master in Public Health from the University of Illinois Chicago. Her professional experiences include years of organizing, advocacy, birth work, and public health research.

Using a trauma-informed and healing-centered approach, she supports patients on their path towards holistic health and wellbeing. You can find her at Sanctuary Health on Mondays and Tuesdays, or you can book directly at her page.

Juanita Montoya, CPM. Traditional Birth. Indigenous birth worker

Juanita created The Rhythm Within, which offers a holistic approach to birth work that uses time-proven birthing practices that center birth as a profound rite of passage.  As a rite of passage labor and birth can become an embodied experience of self-discovery and a renewal of self-love.  A shedding of old roles for a better-fitting one.  In this way, pregnancy is also the time when new parents, new lovers, new selves, new hopes and curiosities are being gestated.  This rite of passage leaves no one unchanged. This is one of birth's greatest gifts, one which we can use for healing and personal growth.

The Rhythm Within offers a caring and non-judgmental space where you can let go of what no longer serves you, while holding onto what does as you embrace the vulnerabilities and joys of your birth journey.  You can find her through her website.

Coté Sáez , Advanced Holistic Labor and Postpartum Doula, Child Birth Educator, Herbalist, Placenta Artist

Born in Santiago and raised in Los Andes, Chile, Coté Sáez moved to the United States, specifically to the Chicago area, in her late 20’s. Besides being the mother of three beautiful children, Coté is a certified Holistic Birth and Postpartum Doula with The Matrona. She is also a Birth Mentor with Birthing from Within, trained in Placenta Encapsulation and trained with CAPPA as Childbirth Educator.

She has also obtained her Advanced Doula Certification in extended studies including: Anatomy & Physiology, Conflict Resolution and Mediation, Holistic Birth, Placenta Medicine, Postpartum, Prenatal Care and Homeopathy. She is also trained in Spinning Babies technique. In addition, she creates handcrafted herbal products for the whole family and a special line of products for both mother and baby.

You can connect for her services on her website.

Birth Roots Community Midwifery

This the ideal midwifery practice for clients seeking holistic, heart-centered, evidence-based home birth attendance, birth and wellness education, mentorship, and reproductive health care.
Birth Roots is a collaboration between longtime dear friends and fellow birth workers Corinne and Coté, and has been in the works for many years as the midwife and doula friends dreamt about how to do their best work together during walks in the woods and time around the fire.

The Birth Roots co-founders discovered that they shared a passion for a client-centered, trauma-informed approach to birth work that brings in traditional wisdom – and they are thrilled to be finally bringing it all together in the form of Birth Roots Community Midwifery.

Their vision is to serve communities of the Chicagoland area by offering our skills, experience, love, and resources as we partner with clients on their journeys to empowered birth and reproductive wellness. Contact them through their website.
